Class 120(2) A winding apparatus wherein yarn is traversed rapidly by means of a rotating hollow cylinder 1 having an endless circumferential zig-zag traverse slot 2 providing three substantially equal traverse cycles per revolution and means for entraining yarn into the traverse slot, is characterized in that the points of entry to and exit from the cylinder of the yarn subtend an angle of substantially 120 degrees with the axis of the cylinder in a plane substantially perpendicular to said axis and the three angles subtended at the axis of the cylinder by the corresponding reversal points 2a of the zig-zag slot are slightly different from each other, e.g. 110, 115 and 135 degrees and the helix angle of the slot immediately leading the yarn to each reversal point are substantially equal, and in that the helix angle of the slot immediately leading the yarn away from each reversal point are substantially equal to each other and greater than the aforementioned helix angles and greater than the helix angle of the intervening portions of the zig-zag slot. The means for entraining the yarn into the traverse slot may be a circumferential slot inside or outside the normal traverse. Two helical slots may be cut in one traverse roll the two slots being constructed so that the yarn may be rapidly transferred from one to the other. For this purpose the slots may be connected by a cross-over slot, Fig. 5, and means such as movable plates 19, 20 provided to transfer the yarn. In other embodiments, air jets and a movable arm are used as the transfer means. When two helical slots are provided they may be in phase or a half a cycle out of phase.
