Abstract

A surface coating composition for a decorative laminate (see Group VIII) comprises per 100 parts by weight of a thermosetting resin, 5-30 parts finely-divided silica and 10-40 parts of finely-divided fibrous cellulosic material, the cellulosic material having a refractive index approximating to that of the cured resin and the composition being clear and highly translucent in its cured condition. In Example 1, the coating composition is prepared from a modified melamine-formaldehyde resin, silica flour which contains very small amounts of metal oxides, cellulosic flock, sodium carboxy methyl cellulose as a wet tack reducing aid and sufficient water to make a 70% solids content dispersion. Other resins used in the examples are a phenol-formaldehyde resin and a copolymer of styrene and the alkyd prepared from 2 moles propylene glycol, one mole of maleic anhydride and one mole of phthalic anhydride, but ethoxyline resins and resins prepared from aminotriazines other than melamine and from urea and dicyandiamide are also mentioned.
