In a welding machine a hollow electrode support is mounted for rotational and axial movement in a frame, the support has a welding electrode mounted eccentrically relative to the rotational axis thereof and the support serves to permit a supply of filler wire and/or a supply of fluid, e.g. an inert gas or cooling liquid, to be fed to the electrode through the interior of the support. The frame 1 of a machine carries a table 2, to the underside of which is secured by a clamp 3 a tubular titanium alloy sheet 4 having a circular hole 5 into which a circular sole plate 6 is to be welded, the sole plate being mounted on a projection 7 on the clamp. The frame also carries bracket 8 on which is rotatably mounted a tubular electrode support 9 carrying a horizontal, longitudinally adjustable arm 10 on which is carried the non-consumable electrode 11. A pinion 16 is splined on the support and is rotated by a chain 18 driven from a motor 17 and a sleeve 20 secured to the sleeve carries a rack 21 meshing with a pinion 22 driven by an electric motor to raise or lower the support. The end of the support engages the projection 7 on the clamp. A block 26 at the top of the support is rotatably mounted in a sleeve 31 provided with connections for argon shielding gas, cooling liquid and a tube 27 for a filler wire (if required). Welding current is supplied via a brush 35 and slip ring 36. In operation the motor effecting vertical movement of the support is controlled by electronic means responsive to the distance of the electrode from the work, to maintain a constant gap.
