Abstract

873,809. Control of D.C. motors; controllers. IGRANIC ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 9, 1959 [March 10, 1958], No. 8022/59. Class 38 (3). A protective system for a skip hoist driven by an electric motor forming part of a Ward- Leonard set comprises a relay 10 which is connected in series with a group of contacts 12 . . . 26 responsive to conditions damaging to said motor, and with a further group of contacts 28 . . . 48 responsive to excess speed and abnormal location of the load. An emergency brake coil 52 is connected in series with the second group of contacts. Thus, if an overload contact in a set 24 is opened, the relay 10 is de-energized and opens its contact 10. This causes the hoist to stop in a normal manner by decreasing speed and braking. When, however, the hoist-car fails to reduce speed at a slow-down point due to circuitfailure, a contact 30 remains open, and when a limit switch 34 or 36 (depending on direction) opens as the car passes the slow-down point, the coil 52 is de-energized causing quick stoppage by an emergency brake. At the same time, the relay 10 is de-energized. A test light 56 and selector switch 58 is used for finding which of the contacts 12 . . . 26 has been opened. A similar test light 60 and selector switch 62 is used for the contacts 28 . . . 48. After the relay 10 has dropped out, a first attempt at re-energization is made by closing push-button 50. If the stoppage was caused by a momentary opening of a self-setting contact, there is no need to use the faultfinding selector switches.
