Abstract
An unsaturated organic monomer is polymerized with an organometallic catalyst under anhydrous conditions and by a process wherein the stream of monomer, catalyst and optionally diluent passes through the polymerization zone under conditions of laminar flow. Monomers specified are ethylene, propylene, butylene, styrene, vinyl toluene, dimethyl styrene, ethyl styrene, diethyl styrene, a -methyl styrene, butadiene, isoprene, dimethyl butadiene, and unspecified chlorine substituted derivatives of ethylenically unsaturated monomers; optionally preformed polymers may be present as described in Specification 821,971. The catalysts disclosed are Alfin and Ziegler-type catalysts (with or without specified substrates) such as those disclosed in Specifications 873,656 and 873,657, and may be formed in situ. If desired there may be included in the reactant stream metallating agents or ingredients which produce polar modified hydrocarbon polymers as specified in Specification 873,656, regulators as in Specification 873,659 modifiers such as mercaptans and organic halides, extenders, short-stop agents and/or antioxidants. The apparatus described for effecting the polymerization under laminar flow comprises an elongated reaction tube (10ft. in length and 2 1/2 inches in diameter) and a pressure controlled discharge valve having a conical surface extending to a sharp apex extending well above the valve seat. Build up of polymer on the walls of the reactor is effected not only by the laminar flow of the reactants, but also by the introduction of the optional ingredients into the polymerization zone itself, by the provision of coated or plated reactors, by ensuring that the polymer solution obtained is kept dilute, by the use of a vertical reactor and by the inclusion of oily extenders. Subsequent to reaction catalyst may be deactivated with carbon dioxide. Sheets of polymer are formed by the process described.
