Abstract
873,202. Fluid bearings. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 9, 1958 [Oct. 18, 1957], No. 32543/57. Class 12 (1). An hydrostatic gas journal bearing, of which Fig. 1 is a developed view, comprises a portion 2 fed by a series of externally-pressurized orifices 3, a circumferential groove 4 having a vent hole 5 and a portion 6 having a pocket 7 supplied from a feed hole 8 and two rows of vent holes 13 to create a circumferentially asymmetric pressure when the pocket 7 is pressurized. Alternatively, the journal could be completely cut through to provide an opening as indicated by the dotted lines 14. A portion 11 is fed by a series of externallypressurized orifices 12. In use, with the outside of the bearing at atmospheric pressure, the orifices 3, 12 are pressurized from manifolds, the gas fed to the pocket 7 conveniently being at the same pressure. The orifices 3, 12 serve to provide stability and the portion 6 serves to provide lift to the shaft. For operation in a pressurized system, the bearing is modified by providing additional grooves 17, 18 and draw-off holes 19, 20. The bearing is inverted so that the pocket is at the top, orifices 2, 12 and vents 13 are made open to the pressure system and holes 8, 5, 10, 19 and 20 are joined to a common pipe which is connected to a draw-off pump. The invention is applied to support the shaft of a compressor for circulating a gas coolant through a nuclear reactor. Jets 3, 12 and pocket 7 are supplied with compressed air at 6 atmospheres pressure and groove 40 and hole 41 are fed with CO 2 at 11 atmospheres pressure to prevent outleakage from the pressurized system. The journal 1 is mounted in a casing 23 which is supported from a housing 21 by a diaphragm 22.
