Abstract

A storage-stable hardenable epoxy resin composition comprises small granules containing: (a) an epoxy resin; (b) a solid condensation product having a molecular weight of at least 200 and an average of at least two active hydrogen atoms per molecule and (c) an epoxy resin hardening agent having a molecular weight of less than 300; the composition of the granules being such that the components described above that would give an undesirable reaction at room temperature, if mixed together, are not in the same granules. Specified combinations are: (1) (a) granules containing the epoxy resin; (b) granules containing the solid condensation product and (c) granules containing the epoxy resin hardener; (2) (a) granules containing the epoxy resin and (b) granules containing the solid condensation product and the epoxy resin hardener and (3) (a) granules containing the epoxy resin and the solid condensate and (b) granules containing the epoxy resin hardener. Specified epoxy resins are made by reacting polyhydric phenols or alcohols with epi- or dichlorohydrin. Specified solid condensation products are novolacs containing at least two phenolic hydroxyl groups per molecule, phenol ketone condensates, condensates of amines or amides and aldehydes and polyamides. Specified epoxy resin hardening agents are amines, e.g. ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine dimethyl amino propyl amine, diethyl amino propyl amine, dicyanodiamine, m-phenylene diamine, n-butyl amine, piperidine, triethyl amine, benzyl dimethyl amine, triethanolamine, dimethyl aminomethyl phenol, tris(dimethyl amino methyl) phenol and pyridine and organic polybasic acids and anhydrides, e.g. oxalic acid, phthalic anhydride and maleic anhydride. The compositions are cured by heating and may be used as moulding powders. In the examples, an epoxy resin made from epichlorohydrin and 2, 2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane and a novolac containing an average of 7,7 hydroxyl groups per molecule made by reacting excess phenol with formaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid are used, exemplified epoxy resin hardening agents being benzyl dimethyl amine and diethylene diamine, the compositions also containing wood flour and a mixture of stearic acid, montan wax and zinc stearate as lubricant.
