Abstract

The invention comprises 3b ,11 a -diacetoxy-12-oxo-23-bromospirostane and a process for the preparation of 3b ,12b -dihydroxy-11-oxo-23-bromospirostane by reacting 11b ,23-dibromohecogenin acetate with an alkali metal acetate in an organic solvent at a temperature between 50 DEG and 155 DEG C., separating the sparingly soluble impurities from the resulting mixture of 3b ,11(a and b )-diacetoxy-12-oxo-23-bromospirostanes (the 11a isomer predominates), and hydrolysing the compounds of the mixture by heating with aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic alkali. The organic solvent may be alcohol or a solvent in which the alkali metal acetate is soluble such as t-butanol or dimethyl formamide. p Detailed examples are given.
