Abstract

Cellulose triacetate fibres, with the exception of fibres made by the acetylation of cellulose acetate fibres of acetyl value below 59%, calculated as acetic acid, are treated with an agent in liquid form selected from (1) isopropyl alcohol; (2) esters of monohydric aliphatic alcohols of the type ROH, where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, preferably containing up to 3 carbon atoms, with C1-C4 fatty acids, e.g. methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, normal- or isopropyl acetate, allyl acetate and vinyl acetate; (3) acetic and propionic acids; (4) caprolactam, gamma-butyrolactone, urea and amides of C1-C4 fatty acids, e.g. acetamide and methylacetamide; (5) mixtures of acetone, water and a water-soluble thiocyanate, e.g. sodium, potassium, ammonium, zinc or calcium thiocyanate, with or without a C1-C4 fatty alcohol and (6) solutions of benzoic, salicylic and other benzene carboxylic acids in C1-C3 fatty alcohols, the treatment being applied for such a time, at such a temperature below 100 DEG C. and at such a concentration (with respect to a diluent) that the sticking point or safe ironing temperature of the fibres is raised by at least 10 DEG C. The fibres may be prepared by the melt-spinning, dry-spinning or wet-spinning of cellulose acetate of acetyl value above 59%, calculated as acetic acid, and may be in the form of continuous filaments, staple fibres in the form of tops, slivers and other structures in which they are loosely bound together, or fabrics or articles made therefrom. The fibrous material may be treated with the liquid by immersion or padding and, after immersion, it is preferably rolled up and allowed to stand for the requisite time, the amount of liquid medium available to the material during treatment preferably being at least 150% by weight, based on the dry weight of the material. The material treated may be free to shrink or shrinkage may be partly or wholly restrained. The treatment is particularly suitable for raising the safe ironing temperature of fibres having a safe ironing temperature below 180 DEG C. The Provisional Specification also refers to the use as treating agent of lactams and lactones, other than caprolactam and gamma-butyrolactone, which contain a lactam or lactone ring of up to 6 atoms. Specifications 500,960 and 776,346 are referred to.
