Abstract
869,182. Drilling-machine details. WITZIG, K. E., and FRANK, R. March 7, 1958, No. 7441/58. Class 83 (3). In a drilling &c. machine, means for controlling the indexing mechanism of a turntable 16 so that it will remain inoperative while the operator is mounting work 12 on the table, irrespective of whether an indexing signal is received before the work-mounting operation is finished, comprises a source 1 emitting a beam 5 which is interrupted by the presence of the operator mounting the work on the table, and a relay 7 operated by the beam when the operator moves out of its path. The light source 1, mirrors 2, 3, 4 and relay 7 are carried by brackets on one side of the machine, the other three sides being occupied by multi-spindle drill-heads (Fig. 2, not shown). Fig. 3 illustrates the setting of the control circuit as the table 16 is being indexed by a motor 17, driving through gearing 18 and a worm 19. The motor is energized by a circuit 62 connected to the motor by a switch 39 which is operated by a pivoted member 37 connected by a link 33 to a spring 35. The switch is held in the position depicted by contact between a projection 34 on the link and a pin 31 on the armature 30 of an electromagnet 29, the circuit of which was opened by a switch 25 operated by a solenoid 24. Energization of solenoid 24 is by closure of a switch 21 operated by withdrawal of the tool-spindles. In Fig. 3, 41 is the light source 43, 44 the mirrors and 45 the photoelectric cell operated by the rays to energize a solenoid 48 for withdrawing its armature 47 from the path of movement of that of solenoid 24, thus permitting movement of armature 23 to open switch 25 when switch 21 is closed. Opening of switch 21 permits a spring 61 to close switch 25, which energizes the magnet 29, withdrawing pin 31 and allowing spring 35 to open motor switch 39. If the operator obstructs the light rays 42, the resulting extended position of armature 47 prevents the opening of switch 25 by closure of switch 21 until the obstruction is removed. A number of oppositely disposed light sources and photo-electric cells may be used (Fig. 4, not shown).
