Abstract
In making regenerated protein fibres by extruding a solution of the protein into a coagulating bath, the fibres are insolubilized by incorporating sodium zirconyl silicate in the spinning solution or by subjecting the fibres to the action of sodium zirconyl silicate, preferably at 60 DEG -80 DEG C. The sodium zirconyl silicate may be added to the coagulating bath or to subsequent treatment baths. Instead of sodium zirconyl silicate, a mixture of a zirconyl salt and sodium silicate may be used. The fibres may be first hardened in a formaldehyde-salt bath and then treated with sodium zirconyl silicate, the fibres being stretched, if desired, before or during the hardening treatment. Alternatively the fibres may be simultaneously treated with sodium zirconyl silicate and formaldehyde, being stretched, if desired, during this treatment. The treatment liquor containing the sodium zirconyl silicate, with or without formaldehyde, may be sprayed on or otherwise applied to the fibres, which are subsequently stored or heated to effect insolubilization. In a preferred method, fibres are immersed in a bath containing the sodium zirconyl silicate in solution for a time sufficient to give the desired insolubilizing effect, and are then removed from the bath and washed free from the sodium zirconyl silicate. The sodium zirconyl silicate bath may contain an acid catalyst, preferably sulphuric acid, and lactic, glycollic, or citric acid as a masking agent, and the fibres, after treatment with the sodium zirconyl silicate, may be treated with an aqueous solution of a cyanate. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of zirconyl salts in general and specifies, in addition to sodium zirconyl silicate, sodium zirconyl sulphate, sodium zirconyl lactate, zirconyl acetate and zirconyl chlorides.
