Abstract

868,948. Stabilizing soil. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N. V. March 16, 1960 [March 18, 1959], No. 9271/60. Class 68(1). Soil is stabilized with a doped cut back or a doped cut back emulsion, the dope for the preparation thereof comprising a solution of alkali metal, preferably sodium and potassium, soaps of oxidized and/or unoxidized carboxylic acids having at least 12 carbon atoms in the molecule, in a solvent consisting of at least 50% by weight of a creosote oil having a phenol content of at least 20% by weight. The creosote oil may contain a petroleum fraction, and the acids may be oxidized fatty acids which are also polymerized. The choice cut back depends upon such factors as the nature of the soil to be stabilized and the atmospheric conditions, and guidance in this respect is furnished. An example of a cut back is 15% by weight of heavy gasoline (boiling range 100-160‹C.) and 85% of straight-run petroleum bitumen having a softening point (Ring and Ball) of 47‹C. and a penetration (100g. 5 sec, 25‹C.) of 90. The doped cut back is made by adding the dope to the slightly heated (not more than 95‹C.) cut back, 12 parts of dope and 88 parts of cut back being referred to. If stabilization is to be effected with a doped cut back emulsion, 10-20 parts of dope is emulsified with 90-80 parts of cut back and water, the minimum amount of water being 14 parts. Further water may be added on the site to reduce transport costs. Depending on the acidity or alkalinity of the soil an auxiliary additive 0À5 to 3% based on the weight of the dry soil, may be mixed with the binder and the soil, e.g. lime, aluminium sulphate, magnesium calcium, strontium or barium oxides or hydroxides. Instead of aluminium sulphate, any water-soluble polyvalent metal salts permitting the formation, witn the soaps present, of salts insoluble in water but soluble in bitumen, may be used, e.g. copper sulphate, ferrous sulphate, ferric chloride, magnesium chloride, zinc chloride, calcium chloride or lead nitrate. Specifications 537,567 and 561,266 are referred to.
