Abstract

868,685. Free-piston gas generators operating on a four-stroke cycle. LICENTIA PATENTVERWALTUNGS-G.m.b.H. May 14, 1958 [May 14, 1957], No. 15428/58. Classes 7(1), 7(2) and 7(6). A stepped piston 10 reciprocating in a resiliently mounted cylinder 44 defines with it four successively firing combustion chambers 21, 23, 22, 24 supplied as shown with air from a central space 18 fed by a double-acting piston pump 14. The pump outlet valves 17, 19 and the combustion chamber inlet valves 25 ... 28 act automatically, inertia forces having a substantial effect. The pump inlet valves 16, 20 and valves 29 ... 32 controlling exhaust to a turbine or turbines (not shown) are hydraulically, electrically or mechanically actuated, e.g. the resilient movements of the cylinder 44 may operate hydraulic valve-actuating means, or one of the movable engine parts may actuate relay contacts, or be magnetic, and so operate electrical valveactuating means. The cylinder 44 may be the reciprocatory member, both the piston 10 and cylinder 44 may reciprocate, or a plurality of separate pistons may take the place of the piston 10. The engine may operate as a diesel or gas engine or by spark-ignition, and be started by compressed air. The pump 14 may be replaced by a pump piston within the space 18 and which is an entirely free inertia-operated member or is geared to the piston 10 to move oppositely thereto.
