Abstract

The separate components of a solder comprising more than one component are applied in layers by vaporization to one of the parts to be soldered or in at least one layer by vaporization to each part to be soldered. The parts are of metal other than semi-conductor metal. The solder may be evaporated from evaporating dishes at high temperature or by cathodic atomization. The metals to be soldered may be uranium, thorium, tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, columbium, beryllium, aluminium, magnesium, zirconium, titanium, hafnium and alloys thereof. The metal parts may be freed from surface materials, e.g. water, by being caused to glow in vacuo and may be degreased and pickled and possibly chemically or electrolytically polished before vaporization. A uranium reactor fuel element core is provided by vaporization with a layer of zinc and a layer of tin and another layer of zinc and these layers may be applied wholly or in part to the can which may be of aluminium alloy, beryllium, magnesium, zirconium or steel.
