Abstract

867,901. Spark gaps. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. July 2, 1959 [July 17, 1958; Jan. 23, 1959], No. 22769/59. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XXXV] A lightning arrester comprises a series stack of spark gap elements 20, 22 held in a pair of moulded semi-cylindrical shells 16 having a plurality of annular grooves for spacing the elements, the shells having engaging longitudinal edges, and a moulded insulating housing 34 completely enclosing and sealing the shells and spark gap elements. The housing may also enclose a stack of non linear resistors 14 in series with the spark gap elements. The housing 34 may be enclosed by an outer housing 36, which may carry a ring 42 having a holder (not shown) for mounting the arrester. The moulded housing may be formed from plastic material which may be a thermoplastic resin such as polyethylene and may include a filler of inorganic particles such as up to 40% mica.
