867,886. Measuring-tapes. FISCO Ltd. July 30, 1959 [Aug. 7, 1958], No. 25345/58. Class 106 (2). An extensible coiled steel tape 7 is disposed in a casing 2 having an aperture 9 through which the tape 7 may be extended and a device 11 is adapted to grip the tape to maintain it in an extended position by bearing upon one edge of the tape, the other edge being pressed against the inside of the casing. A lever 11, pivoted at 4, slides in a slot 14 inclined to the direction of extension of the steel tape 7. On movement of the lever 11 anti-clockwise the tape is locked in its extended position by being gripped between the lever 11 and the casing 2. As only the edges are gripped, the face of the tape is not marked. Moreover, when the tape is locked in position, a limited amount of extension and retraction is permitted.
