Abstract

Surfaces of rubber articles are coated with the reaction product of (a) an organic compound having at least two -NCX radicals in its molecule, where X is oxygen or sulphur, and (b) a polyether or polythioether having at least two hydroxy groups in its molecule, said reaction product containing unreacted -NCX radicals but no cross-linking agent therefor, and the coating converted to a cross-linked condition. The cross-linking may be brought about merely by leaving the coating exposed to the atmosphere, or may be initiated by heating. Compound (a) may be an aromatic or alicyclic di-isocyanate. Compound (b) may be a polyglycol or polythioglycol or a hybrid therebetween, a polydiglycol formal or the sulphur analogues thereof. The preferred polyols are branched-chain polyalkylene ether polyols containing three or more chains each containing a plurality of alkylene oxide units and terminating in a hydroxy group. Small proportions of an ester such as castor oil or a polyhydric alcohol may be added. The coating may be applied to an unvulcanized article in which case vulcanization of the article and curing of the coating take place simultaneously. The compositions may contain dyes or pigments. In the examples, toluene, dicyclohexyl methane and triphenyl methyl diisocyanate are reacted with dehydrated poly-1, 2-propylene glycol or a tripropanolamine-propylene oxide reaction product.ALSO:Surfaces of rubber articles are coated with the reaction product of (a) an organic compound having at least two -NCX radicals in its molecule, where X is oxygen or sulphur, and (b) a polyether or polythioether having at least two hydroxy groups in its molecule, said reaction product containing unreacted -NCX radicals but no cross-linking agent therefor, and the coating converted to a cross-linked condition. Small proportions of an ester such as castor oil, or a polyhydric alcohol may be added. The coating may be applied by brushing, dipping or spraying; it may be applied to an unvulcanised article in which case vulcanisation of the article and curing of the coating take place simultaneously. Examples are given of coating strips and sheets of rubber, footwear, tyres and a foam rubber cushion.
