Abstract
867,383. Air conditioning apparatus. AMERICAN AIR FILTER CO. Inc. Oct. 24, 1958 [Jan. 6, 1958], No. 34069/58. Class 137. An air conditioning apparatus comprises a cabinet with an air inlet and a damper for regulating the proportion of room air to outdoor air induced into the apparatus by a blower, an adjustable by-pass damper to control the air flow either through a heat exchanger or through a by-pass chamber 9 an air outlet to the room, the heat exchanger being positioned between the inlet and outlet with its lower edge adjacent a rear wall of the cabinet and its upstream face extending upwardly and forwardly across the cabinet so that its upward forward edge forms the rear boundary of the bypass chamber. As shown, dampers 38 and 34 are mounted for rotation on shafts 40 and 36 which are secured to vertical partitions and these dampers control the amount of room air and outdoor air which enters via inlets 15 and 12. A passageway 42 incorporating a removable filter 44 supported in frame 96, connects the lower centre section of the cabinet with the upper section containing the heat exchanger 50 and a by pass damper 52 which extends transversely between partitions and is pivotally attached to a shaft 84. The blower consists of a series of laterally spaced fans 46 located in the upper section of the cabinet with the air outlet 18. With the damper 52 in the by pass position, (Fig. 10) air flow through the heat exchanger is prevented by flexible strips 66 which contact the members 72, 74, and the blades 68 and 70 which contact ledges 78 and 80, while the trough face 64 of the damper also deflects the air away from the heat exchanger. With the damper in the position shown in Fig. 2, air passes through the heat exchanger, the strips 66 then sealing against members 72 and 76. The conditioned air is directed into the annular inlets 49 of the fan housings 48 by means of oppositely disposed vanes 92 and 94 and then passes into the room via outlet 18. A drip pan 90 situated under the heat exchanger and attached to frame 96 directs any condensate into a receiver which is releasably connected to the drip pan. The damper movements may be automatically controlled according to the room temperature registered by a thermostat which then operates a pneumatic system.
