Abstract

An aliphatic primary dimethylol is produced by subjecting an olefinically-unsaturated fatty acid having at least 16 carbon atoms in the molecule to hydroformylation, treating the product with liquid water at elevated temperature and under pressure to purify the aldehydomonocarboxylic acid formed, and converting the purified aldehydo-monocarboxylic acid into the dimethylol by the two-stage hydrogenation process described and claimed in Specification 867,229. The product may be fractionated under high vacuum after the separation of the hydrogenation catalyst. When the hydroformylation is carried out batchwise it is preferred to introduce the unsaturated acid into the hydroformylation zone during 50% to 90% of the period required for the carbon monoxide and hydrogen addition. In the example a mixture of unsaturated fatty acids containing oleic, isoleic, linoleic, linolenic and clupanodic acid is hydroformylated using a cobalt sulphate solution containing iron and hydroquinone as catalyst; the mixture of aldehydo-carboxylic acids is washed with liquid water at elevated temperature and pressure and hydrogenated according to the process described in Specification 867,229. The product consists mainly of heptadecane-dimethylol with some heptadecane methylol. Specification 734,030 also is referred to.
