[Also in Group XXX] Panels are formed from loose raw material such as shredded wood by scattering the material from at least three charging stations on to a continuously moving support, such as a belt conveyer, to form a continuous layered strand of approximately uniform width and depth, the charging stations which form the outer layers of the strand serving to segregate different particle sizes so that the finer particles are on the outer sides of the outer layers, the other station(s) being operated without any segregating effect. In the apparatus for chipboard manufacture, as shown, chips fed to moving belts 2a, 2b, 13 are removed therefrom by stripper rollers 7a, 7b, 7c and fed to scatter rollers 8a, 8b, 8c which form a bed of chips on a moving band 6. The rollers 8a, 8c are ribbed or spiked and scatter the chips forming the outer layers of the bed, arranging them with the smaller particles outermost in both layers. A deflector b mixes the particles from the roller 8b which form the central layer of the bed which is levelled by a spiked roller 10 which removes any excess and transfers it to a belt conveyer 11. The chips are supplied from a hopper 1, having a collector belt 3 and an ejector belt 2 which feeds the belts 2a, 2b, 13 through distributer flaps 4 and 5. Any excess on the belt 13 is removed by a spiked roller 14 and transferred to a belt conveyer 16. The chips on the belts 2a, 2b pass under back-raking spiked belts 3a, 3b. Alternative means such as vibrating screens or air blasts may be used to produce the segregating effect on the chips forming the outer layers of the band.
