866,486. Cheese making. VOLMA N. V. Oct. 29, 1959 [Nov. 19, 1958], No. 36791/59. Class 84. The whey is removed from the curds in a sieve cylinder in which the curds are also partly compressed, after which they are finally compressed in a mould. In the form shown in Fig. 2, curds are fed directly from a vat or from a collecting tank to an inlet opening 3 in a cylinder 1 with a double plunger 2 which feeds a measured quantity of curd through the opening 4 to one of a number of sieve cylinders 6 carried on a turntable 5. The cylinders 6 move over an arcuate plate 8 which closes them at the bottom. The draining whey is collected in a trough 7. Any residue is expelled by a plunger 9. Each cylinder then moves over a hole in the plate 8 through which the curd is expelled by a plunger 10 into one of a succession of moulds 12 brought into position by a turntable 11. In the form shown in Fig. 3, each sieve cylinder 22 has a plunger 23 controlled by an air-operated cylinder 25. Each cylinder passes, in turn, over an air-operated valve 29, in a plate 21, controlling the supply of curd from a pipe 30. The supply of curd lifts the plunger 23, the weight of which may be counterbalanced by an air supply to the cylinder 25, until it operates a switch 28. The whey drains into a channel 31. The cylinders are discharged into moulds as in the arrangement of Fig. 2.
