Abstract
866,404. Batteries. SERVEL Inc. June 25, 1959 [June 26, 1958], No. 21823/59. Class 53. A primary cell has a depolarizer 3 in the form of a pellet which is inserted in a metal cup 2 forming the positive terminal. To ensure good contact between the pellet and cup they are bonded together by a layer 7 of a conductive composition which consists of finely-divided metal or graphite dispersed in wax. The composition is applied in the molten state to the two parts and allowed to cool and set. The metal consists of silver or of copper or other metal coated with silver. The depolarizer 3 consists of an oxide of mercury, silver, copper, manganese or nickel mixed with graphite. Above the depolarizer is a barrier disc 4 of parchment paper, porous vinyl resin, magneium oxide or silicate. A porous separator 5 rests on the disc 4 and is moistened with a solution of an alkali hydroxide which may contain dissolved zinc or aluminium oxide. A compressed powdered zinc anode 6 is in contact with the head 8a of a rivet 8 made of steel coated with tin, zinc or nickel. The rivet passes through a seal comprising a layer 9a of semi-rigid material such as a resin reinforced with glass fibre, and a resilient layer 9b. The seal closes the cup 2 and is enclosed in an outer cup 1 the open ene of which is crimped round the lower end of cup 2. U.S.A. Specifications 2,702,756 and 2,771,380 are referred to.
