Abstract

A vulcanizer for the continuous vulcanization of the vulcanizable covering of electric wire, cable, &c., consists of an elongated cylindrical tube 2 through which the article to be vulcanized is continuously advanced, means 4 for admitting dry steam to the tube interior at a position intermediate the tube ends, means 6 for supplying water under pressure to the tube interior adjacent <PICT:0866353/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0866353/IV (a)/2> each end of the tube to provide a water seal for the steam within the tube, sealing means 28 at each end of the tube co-operating with the advancing article for preventing excessive escape of water from the tube while the article is entering, passing through, and leaving the tube, an extension tube 16 on each end of the elongated cylindrical tube, the outer ends of each of these being provided with a cover plate 18 having an opening 20 for the passage of a pulling line 36 for the cable, to prevent the escape of water to a deleterious extent until the cable has been advanced sufficiently to have entered the sealing means 28 at each end in turn of the elongated cylindrical tube. The cover plates are operated by air cylinders 26.
