865,376. Feeding sheets. SPIESS, G. Oct. 5, 1959 [Oct. 14, 1958], No. 33614/59. Class 100(1) In a device for separating sheets from the top of a pile 3 comprising a suction nozzle 1 formed on the end of a piston 8 which is urged downwardly from a casing 13 by a spring 17 to engage the top sheet 2, and is raised automatically by suction when the sheet seals the face of the nozzle 1, when the piston is in the fully raised position shown, the area of the sheet 2 subjected to suction by the nozzle 1 is reduced so that the sheet can be more easily removed from the nozzle. The piston 8 has two separate bores 7, 14 which lead, respectively, to an annular recess 5 and a central recess 6 in the face of the nozzle 1, the recess 5 having a much larger area than the recess 6. When the piston 8 is at the top of its stroke, the bore 7 is vented to atmosphere through slots 11, 12, and the bore 14 is still connected to the suction line 10 through a restricted passage 16, so that the sheet 2 is only gripped lightly and can easily be removed from the nozzle 1.
