865,169. Centrifugal and axial flow fans and pumps. DAVIDSON & CO. Ltd. June 19, 1959, No. 21140/59. Class 110 (1). In a wheel for a rotary fan, pump or the like each blade has its trailing edge divided so as to provide a fixed sub-portion 25 and a movable sub-portion 29, both sub-portions sweeping substantially the same path during rotation of the wheel. The movable sub-portion of the blade which is mounted in the blade surface facing the direction of rotation, is mounted on a hinge-pin 30 and a slot 33, arcuate about the pin 30 is provided in the hub 22. The movable sub-portion 29 of the blade is set to the required angle and locked by means of a bolt 32 in the slot 33. The hinge-pin 30 may run the full length of the blade, Fig. 1, or the movable subportion may be mounted on a spigot pivot-pin 34, Fig. 6. The movable sub-portion may also be mounted so as to face away from the direction of rotation of the wheel, Fig. 12, and it may only occupy part of the span of the blade. The invention is applicable to fan wheels having solid or hollow fabricated blades and may be applied to shrouded centrifugal fan wheels, Fig. 12, as well as to axial flow fans, Fig. 1.
