Abstract

A drum for magnetic data storage is constructed by casting a drum of non-magnetic material (e.g. aluminium or an alloy thereof) spraying the surface of the drum-casting with a layer of non-magnetic metal (preferably the same as the casting), and machining the sprayed layer to give a smooth surface which is then coated with magnetisable material. This method permits the formation of a good surface, free of blow holes and pits which would result if the drum-casting itself were machined, to receive the coating of magnetisable material.ALSO:A drum for magnetic data storage is constructed by casting a drum of non-magnetic material (e.g. aluminium or an alloy thereof, or gunmetal) spraying the surface of the drum-casting with a layer of non-magnetic metal (preferably the same as the casting), and machining the sprayed layer to give a smooth surface which is then coated e.g. by spraying or flow-coating with magnetizable material, e.g. magnetizable iron oxide in a binding medium. This method permits the formation of a good surface, free of blow holes and pits which would result if the drumcasting itself were machined, to receive the coating of magnetizable material.
