Abstract

864,906. Reclining chairs. LORENZ, A. July 18, 1958 [Aug. 6, 1957], No. 23088/58. Class 52(2). In a reclining chair having an intermediate tilted position as well as fully-reclined and upright positions and two sets of constrained linkages, one to function on movement to a tilted position and the other on further movement to fully reclined position, a back rest 5 is pivotally connected to a seat 4 and to links 10, 19 by means of a plate 7 rigidly secured to the back rest, link 19 being pivoted at 18 to the frame and the seat 4 is mounted by links 11, 12 on a plate link 16 also supported by pivot pin 18. A lazy tong linkage supporting a leg rest 6 is operated by the other end of link 12 so that movement to the tilted position swings out the leg rest. A second linkage comprises the plate link 16, links 19, 21, 27 and a bellcrank lever 23 pivotally supported on a bracket secured to the chair frame. Further pressure on the back rest 5 pushes forward link 21 to actuate the bellcrank lever 23 and raise the forward end portion of plate link 16. In a modification Fig. 6 the back rest is pivoted to a bracket on the seat at 708 and to a guiding link 110. A plate link 116 is pivoted to the frame at 118 and a bellcrank 123 is pivoted to the frame at 124, the leg rest 6 being mounted on a scissors type linkage 129. In another modification Fig. 8 back rest 5 is pivoted at 208 to the seat bracket arm 207 by a bracket arm 209 having an extension 210 connected by a link 221 to an angular link 223 pivoted to the frame at 224. A plate link 216 is pivotally mounted on the frame at 218 and has an arm member 213 pivoted at 212 to an arm 211 rigidly secured to the seat 4. The leg rest is mounted on a linkage 229 and is connected to an actuating link 231 having link connections 232, 233 with the link 216 and a stud 234 on link 216 engages link 233 to limit the upward projecting movement of the leg rest. In another modification Fig. 10 the seat has a bracket 307 pivotally connected to a link 309 rigid with back rest 5, the plate link 316 is pivoted to the frame at 318 and link 309 is coupled by a link 321 to a curved link 323 pivoted to a bracket 325 on the frame. Leg rest 6 is carried on a lazy tong linkage. In a still further modification Fig. 14 the leg rest 6 is pivoted to the seat at 430 by an arm 429 rigid therewith and a link 432 pivoted to the bracket at 431 is pivoted to a link 434 pivoted to the plate link 416.
