An insulated tank, for the storage of liquified gas, containing irregularities in its outer steel wall, to which flexible material (5) is bonded and then ground down to give a true cylindrical surface using a grinding head (9) mounted on a radial arm (7) rotating about and movable along the vertical column (8). Inflexible segmented insulating panels (10) are bonded on to the inside of the trued surface and to each other, forming the final inner surface.
