Abstract
864,482. Hydraulic machines. MATERIEL INDUSTRIEL S.A., and CONSTRUCTIONS MECANIQUES SOC. ANON. RENENS. Jan. 15, 1958 [Jan. 29, 1957], No. 1460/58. Class 69 (2). [Also in Group XXVIII] In an hydraulically operated machine for packing ballast under railway sleepers by means of tools reciprocated towards and away from each other, the limit of the opening (return) stroke of the tools is adjustable. As shown in Fig. 1 tool actuating pistons 3 are supplied with liquid by a pump 6 through a control valve 20. When valve 20 is moved to a position F, liquid is supplied through lines 17, 19 to both faces of the pistons for a forward stroke. In a position A of the valve liquid is supplied through line 17 for a return stroke, liquid in space 14 passing to exhaust through lines 16, 12, the line 19 being blocked by the valve so that the piston is halted when it covers line 16. In position B line 19 is opened to exhaust to increase the length of the return stroke. In the modification shown in Fig. 2 a rotary valve 26 is provided in a casing 24 secured to the cylinder, line 16 communicating via bores 30, 29 with a slot 28 in the valve which registers, as the valve is rotated, with ports 18 formed in the casing 24. When the control valve (not shown) is in its position A liquid is exhausted through line 16 until the piston covers the appropriate port 18 so that a number of intermediate stop positions can be obtained. For a continuous adjustment, casing 24 is dispensed with and the rotary valve instead of having a slot is provided with a radial duct. The piston is provided with an extension having a bore to receive the valve member, the end of the extension being shaped to vary the return stroke according to the angular position of the valve. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 pumps 6, 6a and six electro-magnetically controlled valves 35 controlled by a switch 34 are provided. Switch 34 has positions F, M, A, B, in each position an unhatched rectangle indicates that the corresponding valve is open, a hatched rectangle that the valve is closed. In position A the opening motion is limited by the simultaneous blocking by the piston of outlet line 16 and an inlet line 40, 41.
