Abstract

In a process for the dehydrogenation of 3-oxo-steroids to D 1,4-3-oxo-steroids by means of a selenium compound having dehydrogenating action, the dehydrogenation is carried out in the presence of a metal of the second or eighth group of the Periodic System. The process may be combined with one wherein the selenium containing fraction obtained after the separation of the D 1,4-3-oxo steroids is treated with nickel or iron and the so obtained 3-oxo-steroids which are completely or partially dehydrogenated in ring A or a mixture thereof are isolated and if desired again dehydrogenated as in the first step to yield the D 1,4-3-oxo-steroid.
