Abstract

864,193. Railway vehicles axle load measuring systems. SAUNDERS-ROE Ltd. Sept. 14, 1959 [Sept. 29, 1958], No. 31074/58. Class 40(1). [Also in Group XL (c)] A system for measuring axle loads of railway vehicles comprises a pair of electric resistance vertical strain gauges (e.g. 11 and 12) made of thin foil on opposite vertical faces of the web of a rail 28 at a point where it rests on a sleeper or other support 30, and a circuit to indicate or record the mean value of the strain, thus balancing out lateral strains. Gauges can be similarly arranged on the companion rail 29 and each pair is temperature-compensated by similar and adjacent gauges (e.g. 17 and 18) orientated so as not to respond to vertical compression, Fig. 1. All the gauges in their balanced pairs are connected in a bridge-circuit, Fig. 2, the output of which is amplified in a pushpull transistor circuit, Fig. 5 (not shown) and operates, for example, a thyratron relay unit which responds to the different loads at different thresholds and may control the braking intensity accordingly. Alternatively the four gauges forming each arm may be all in series or all in parallel. In a static weighbridge, the strain 81 and compensating 82 gauges are incorporated in the same foil of dimensions about 6x1 inches and consist of zig-zag tracks as in Fig. 4. Duplication of such gauges at adjacent sleeper support positions, Fig. 3 (not shown), enables complete vehicle loads to be measured.
