Abstract
864,035. Pneumatic gauging. BRITISH CELANESE Ltd. Nov. 1, 1957, No. 34163/57. Class 106 (2). Apparatus for gauging the thickness of film 13 whilst it is travelling comprises a cylindrical roll 10 and a pneumatic proximity gauge, the nozzle 22 of which forms part of a rigid structure 19, 20, having feet 29 adapted to contact the film 13 where it is running over the roll 10 and serving to position the structure 19, 20, so that the air jet is always directed substantially along a diameter of the roll, and the nozzle 22 is maintained at a substantially constant distance from the surface of the roll 10, in spite of any slight eccentricity of the roll. The structure 19, 20 is supported by leaf springs 17 from a carriage 15 able to move parallel to the axis of the roll 10. The pins 28 carrying the feet 29 are axially adjustable, being locked in position by screws 31, and the nozzle 22 is also adjustable, being locked in position by screw 26. The pressure variations in the air flowing through the nozzle 22 may be indicated by a single pressure gauge or by a differential system using a fixed reference orifice in parallel with the nozzle 22, differential pressures only being indicated or recorded.
