863,976. Stuffing-box substitutes. HENRY, H. P. Jan. 11, 1960 [Feb. 9, 1959], No. 4495/59. Class 122 (5). In a liquid pressure device, such as, for example, a shock-absorber, comprising a piston 17 slidable in a cylinder 11 and mounted on a rod 14 which projects through both ends of the cylinder and has its projectirg portions enclosed by flexible boots 24, 25, the spaces enclosed by the boots are interconnected so that air is displaced from one to the other when the piston moves in the cylinder. The boots 24 and 25 extend respectively between a projection 23 on the cylinder end-plate 12 and a collar 21 on the rod and between a projection 23 on the end-plate 13 and a disc 22 on the rod and their interiors are connected by passages 28 and 29 in the plates 12 and 13, respectively, and a tube 27 in a housing 10 surrounding the cylinder 11 and forming an oil reservoir therefor. Alternatively, the boot interiors may be connected by longitudinal and radial passages in the rod 14 or by a pipe outside the housing 10.
