Abstract

863,770. Protective cut-out arrangements. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. April 20, 1959 [April 24, 1958], No. 13389/59. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXV] A protective system for a generator operating either alone or in parallel with others comprises means whereby, should the output voltage become unstable through faulty operation of the voltage regulator or, in a parallel operating system, through failure to synchronize properly, the generator is disconnected by operation of its circuit-breaker and-if desired-its field winding de-energized. An alternating current generator 1 is connected in parallel with another alternating current generator 2 to busbars 3 by means of circuit-breakers 4, 5, respectively. Faulty operation of a voltage regulator 11 associated with, say, the generator 1 causes instability resulting in oscillations in the output voltage of the generator. The oscillations will be reflected in the output voltage of a rectifier bridge 15 supplied by way of a transformer 12. The output of the rectifier bridge 15 is connected to a filter circuit 21-23 which filter circuit gives an output when the modulation of the generator output voltage by the oscillations therein is within a predetermined range of frequencies and is in excess of a predetermined magnitude. The output of the filter is amplified by a transistor amplifier 26 and is arranged to charge a capacitor 33 such that when the charge on the capacitor 33 exceeds the break-down voltage of a Zener diode 34 energization of the trip coil 7 of the circuit-breaker 4 causes the generator 1 to be disconnected from the system. If desired, the field winding 8 may be deenergized at the same time. Operation of the system upon the occurrence of transitory conditions is prevented by the delay introduced by charging of the capacitor 33 whilst selection of the faulty generator is provided by means of the transformers 16 and saturable current transformers 19 similarly to the manner set out in Specification 858,646. The system may also be applied to protection of a single machine. Specification 745,964 also is referred to.
