Abstract
863,714. Polymerized bis (2 : 3-epoxycyclopentyl) ether. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Dec. 18, 1957 [Dec. 20, 1956], No. 39330/57. Class 2(5). Solid resins are made by polymerizing bis (2 : 3-epoxycyclopentyl) ether in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide, a quaternary ammonium compound, or an etherate or amine complex of a metal halide Lewis acid as a catalyst, at a temperature between 25‹C. and 250‹C. Preferably the epoxide and catalyst are first mixed at 0‹-30‹C., the mixture then heated to 50‹-160‹C. to form a gel and the gel cured at 100‹-250‹C. The catalyst may be added dissolved in an organic solvent or in water. The resinforming mixtures are useful in the manufacture of coating compositions (with or without a solvent), conduits for carrying hot fluids, tools and dies. Specification 812,374 is referred to.
