Abstract

863,694. Hammers. BIRMINGHAM BELTING CO. Ltd. Dec. 17, 1959 [Jan. 3, 1959], No. 289/59. Class 61. In a hammer having a renewable striking face or faces made from a relatively soft material and attached to a head made of relatively hard material by a screw threaded part 14 on the face portion 13 engaging with a corresponding screw threaded part 15 of the head portion 11, the face and head portions have co-operating mutually engaging surfaces which are remote from the screw threaded parts and which are wholly or in part of non-mating configuration such that application of pressure tending to force the two portions together, causes the soft material of the face portion to be distorted into mating engagement with the hard material of the head portion. As shown the head portion 11 is provided with a circular recess 17 surrounding the threaded opening 15 and dimensioned to receive the shoulder 16 on the face portion 10. The base of the recess 17 and the rim of the wall surrounding the recess are provided with radial grooves 18, 19 which co-operate with the plain surfaces of the underside of the face portion 10. In a modification the surface locking formations are ratchet teeth. In another modification the internal wall of the recess 17 is formed with axially extending teeth or serrations which co-operate with the plain surface of the shoulder 16 on the face portion. In another modification the face portion 10 is provided at its periphery with an axially extending flange 22 which telescopes over the outer end of the head portion 11, grooves, serrations or teeth being provided around the periphery of the outer end of the portion 11. In another modification the screwed stem extends axially from a part spherical or domed boss, the head of the hammer being provided with a recess of corresponding form. The tool may or may not be equipped with a shaft.
