Abstract
863,570. Ceramic glass. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Dec. 21, 1959 [Dec. 31, 1958], No. 43355 /59. Class 56. Semi-crystalline bodies are made by the heat treatment of glass bodies of the types R 2 O, BaO, SiO 2 in which R 2 O represents the alkali metal oxides Li 2 O, Na 2 O and K 2 O, and Li 2 O, Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 containing by weight percentage 0À001-1 Cu; 0À001-0À25 Ag or 0À001-0À10 An by melting, shaping and heat treating the glass under sufficiently reducing conditions to reduce the metal compound and the metal in collordial suspension to make the glass non-photosensitive, the heat treatment comprising raising its temperature to between 580‹C. and 650‹C. and holding it for a time ranging from about 8 hours at 580‹C to about ¢ hour at 650‹C. Preferably the temperature is then raised to between 700‹C. and 850‹0. and held for a time ranging from about 8 hours at 700‹C. to about 1 hour at 850‹C. The glass may also contain 0À001-0À1% of one or more of the noble metals Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Li or Pt. General ranges for the glasses are (1) SiO 2 . 50 to 85 ; BaO 3 to 45 ; alkali metal oxide 5 to 25 of which Li 2 O is 0 to 25, Na 2 O 0 to 10 and K 2 O 0 to 10, the total Na 2 O + K 2 O being not more than 15 when BaO exceeds 20 nor more than 8 when the BaO is less than 20, 0 to 10 of the oxides of metals other than Ba of the 2nd periodic group the total with BaO not exceeding 45 and Al 2 O 3 0 to 10, the total of these oxides being at least 95, all in percentages by weight and (2) SiO 2 , 60 to 85 ; Al 2 O 3 2 to 25 ; Li 2 O 6 to 15 the ratio Al 2 O 3 / Li 2 O being less than 1À7 and Na 2 O and/or K 2 O 0 to 4, the total of these oxides being at least 97%. A number of suitable batches are given. Specifications 752,243 and 863,569 are referred to.
