Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0863550/IV (b)/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom, a C2-4 alkyl, a phenyl or a benzyl group and the preparation thereof by reacting an appropriate 3-mercapto diphenyl-amine with sulphur or a sulphur dihalide and separating any structural isomer from the reaction product or (when R is a hydrogen atom only) replacing the benzyl group in 3-benzylmercaptophenthiazine by a hydrogen atom by a hydrogenolysis. The process may be combined with one wherein the 3-mercaptodiphenylamine starting material is produced by reduction of the corresponding 3-mercaptonitrobenzene condensation of the amine so formed with an o-halobenzoic acid and decarboxylating the resulting condensation product and/or one wherein the 3-mercaptophenthiazines of the invention are condensed with a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0863550/IV (b)/2> wherein X is a chlorine or bromine atom, to produce a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0863550/IV (b)/3> Specification 863,551 is referred to.ALSO:Pharmaceutical preparations contain, in addition to an inert carrier, phenthiazines of the general formula <FORM:0863550/VI/1> wherein R is a C2-4 alkyl group, a phenyl group or a benzyl group. Specification 863,551 also is referred to.
