Abstract

863,529. Sawing. S. A. ASSOCIATED NEWSPAPERS Ltd. Jan. 5, 1960 [Jan. 5, 1959], No. 354/60. Class 145. A reel 10 of newsprint is sawn radially by a band saw 58 while being supported and rotated in bearings 30 on a wheeled carriage 28. The saw pulleys 54, 56 are carried by crossheads 48, 50 movable up and down on a frame 44 and guide rods 60 by a motor 76 driving pinions 84 which engage toothed racks 86 on rods 88 extending up from the crossheads and connected by cables 89 to counterweights. One saw pulley 56 is driven by a splined shaft 74 rotated by a belt drive 66 from a motor 68. The reel 10 is fitted with a shaft 32 secured to it to prevent relative angular movement and is loaded up a ramp 34 into the open-topped bearings 30 and the shaft 32 is then secured by a collar 36 to a drive comprising a reductiongear box 38, clutch 42 and motor 40. The carriage is then moved under the saw so that the neck can be divided or have damaged ends cut off. The descent of the saw is stopped by an electric eye 90 before it contacts the shaft 32 and a jack plunger 92 is raised in the vicinity of the cut to relieve the saw blade while it is retracting : if it is necessary for the jack to act as a support while sawing proceeds, the plunger may be fitted with rollers. The saw has between one to eight teeth per inch, preferably three, and alternate teeth are unset with the intermediate teeth set alternately left and right to between 0À02 inch and 0À025 inch at the point. The linear speed of the saw is between 6000 and 8500 feet per min. and the rate of feed between four and six inches per min. The depth of the saw teeth is about # inch the tension of the saw blade is about 1500 pounds and the speed of the reel is about 50 r.p.m.
