Abstract
The invention comprises amino-alcohol derivatives of tin, lead or silicon (see Group IV(a)), having the general formula: <FORM:0863412/IV (b)/1> where M is the metal, R is an alkyl radical having 1 to 18 carbon atoms or an alkaryl, aralkyl or aryl radical having 6 to 10 carbon atoms, R1 is an alkylene radical, R11 is hydrogen, an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or an alkyl, alkanyl or aryl radical having 6 to 10 carbon atoms, R111 is an alkyl or alkenyl radical having 10 to 18 carbon atoms, x is 0, 1, 2 or 3 and y has a maximum value of 4-x. The compounds are prepared by transesterification of the metal orthoester with an aminoalcohol, followed, if desired, by addition to a carboxylic acid to provide the above compounds where y is not zero. Among the compounds described are (EtO)2 Pb[OC2H4N(C2H4OH) 2]2, (EtO)2 Sn [OC2H4N(C2H4OH)2]2 and their oleate salts. The compounds are used as pigment dispersants.ALSO:A pigment dispersant comprises an aminoalcohol derivative of silicon, tin or lead, having the general formula: <FORM:0863412/III/1> where M is the metal, R is an alkyl radical having 1 to 18 carbon atoms or an alkaryl, aralkyl or aryl radical having 6 to 10 carbon atoms, R1 is an alkylene radical, R11 is hydrogen, an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or an alkaryl, aralkyl or aryl radical having 6 to 10 carbon atoms, R111 is an alkyl or alkenyl radical having 10 to 18 carbon atoms, x is 0, 1, 2 or 3 and y has a maximum value of 4-x (see Group IV(a)). The dispersant may be used in organic media such as kerosene, terpenes or xylenes, with natural or synthetic resins, in paints, lacquers or varnishes. The specified pigment is titanium dioxide, which is dispersed by di-butoxy-di (triethanolamine)silane-N,N1-dioleate. Many other dispersants are specified.
