Abstract

Aromatic hydrocarbons, particularly polycyclic, and carcinogenous hydrocarbons, are separated from liquids, smokes and gases by selective adsorption on a polyaryl silicone. The Polyaryl silicone may be used as flakes, powders, granules or supported on cellulose, or may be in the form of polyhydroxy compounds treated, e.g. etherified or esterified, to introduce arylsilyl groups, the polyhydroxy compound being for example alumina, silica gel or cellulose; a suitable arylsilyl group is triphenylsilyl.ALSO:Cigarette filters which remove carcinogenous hydrocarbons from tobacco smoke are made of polyaryl silicones or polyhydroxy compounds etherified or esterified with arylsilyl groups. The material may be a support such as cellulose impregnated with a polysiloxane substituted with phenyl and methyl groups or alumina, silica gel or cellulose etherified with triphenylsilyl.
