863,279. Transparent thermoplastic compositions. DISTILLERS CO. Ltd. May 1, 1959 [May 15, 1958], No. 15589/58. Class 2(6). Transparent thermoplastic compositions comprise 1-15% of a synthetic rubber which is of refractive index 1À533-1À563 and is a polymer or copolymer of a conjugated diene in a copolymer of 30-75% of styrene with methyl methacrylate. The conjugated diene from which the synthetic rubber is prepared may be butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene or dimethylbutadiene. The synthetic rubber is exemplified by copolymers of butadiene and styrene. The synthetic rubber may be mixed with the styrene-methyl methacrylate copolymer on a calender or in a rotary mill or the synthetic rubber may be dissolved and the solution mixed with the styrene-methyl methacrylate copolymer or a solution thereof; alternatively, the synthetic rubber may be present in the monomer mixture from which the styrenemethyl methacrylate copolymer is made. The styrene-methyl methacrylate copolymer may be made by copolymerizing a mixture of the monomers in the absence of a polymerization initiator, the polymerization being initiated at above 100‹C. Light and heat stabilizers and plasticizers and lubricants such as paraffin hydrocarbons and butyl stearate may be incorporated.
