Class 120(2) A thread tensioning device having tensioning members movable relatively to one another automatically in dependence on the thread tension, particularly a tensioning device having a member such as a lever influencing, in dependence on its position, the mutual positions of the movable tensioning members and deflecting the thread, is characterized in that retarding means coupled operationally to the movable tensioning members are so constructed as to produce a greater retardation of the movement of the members in the direction in which the tensioning action increases than in the direction in which the tensioning action decreases. A lever 10, pivoted at 9, responds to changes in thread tension and by means of a pin 27 bearing on a collar 28 and affecting through members 29, 30, 31 one of the discs 32, 34 adjusts the pressure between the discs and thus the thread tension. The pressure on the discs 32, 34 is maintained by a spring 15 fastened at one end to the lever 10 and at the other to a nut 23 slidable but not rotatable in the housing. On the passage of a knot through the device, the discs 32, 34 open very wide, and but for the damping action of a piston 18 attached by a rod 17 to the lever 10 and sliding in a cylinder 19 would close tightly and grab the thread. Instead of the piston and cylinder a flywheel or fan wheel may be provided to damp the motion of the lever.
