Abstract
863,000. Laying pipes. GAZ DE FRANCE. Aug. 14, 1959 [Aug. 14, 1958], No. 27927/59. Class 99(2). A method of laying a pipe-line which is submerged over a considerable distance comprises the steps of forming the pipe-line of a number of individual sections, hauling a first section 1 in the vicinity of the surface of the water and immersing to the bottom 2 the portion of that section which is remote from the hauling point, similarly hauling a second section 1<SP>1</SP>, and connecting one of the ends of the section 1<SP>1</SP> to the corresponding end of the section 1 and immersing the whole to the bottom with the exception of the opposite end of the section 1<SP>1</SP>, the operations of hauling, connecting and immersing being repeated a number of times corresponding to the number of pipe sections. As shown, the pipe sections have secured thereto floats 3 for maintaining the sections below the surface of the water, and vertical floats 4, and are hauled into position by a winch 8 mounted on a floating and anchored platform 9, the floats 4 being released by ropes and the floats 3 being automatically released upon contact with the bed 2. The end 16 of the pipe section 1<SP>1</SP> is joined to the end 15 of a preceding section 1 by the use of a second floating platform 17, the sections being held in position by cranes 21.
