Abstract

862,305. Writing instruments. RITTER, J., and DOETTLINGER, A. May 16, 1958 [May 18, 1957], No. 15740/58. Addition to 785,249. Class 146(3). In a writing instrument of the general type described in the parent Specification the ball or other roiling body forming part of the locking means is restrained against radial deviation by metal surfaces. As shown; the writing unit 2 which is made of metal is formed with a circumferential groove 3 and is slidable in two sleeves 5, 6- made of synthetic plastic material and frictionally mounted in an externally threaded metal tube 1, e.g. of brass, which serves to unite the upper and lower portions of the pen barrel. The sleeves 5, 6 are formed with opposed, toothed cam surfaces which act on a ball 7 carried in the groove 3. Successive depressions of the unit 2 causs the ball 7 to engage alternately in deep and shallow recesses in the cam surface of the sleeve 5 to latch 'the writing unit in positions where the writing point is respectively retracted within the barrel and projected therefrom. Instead of uniting the barrel parts the tube 1 may be formed as a threaded tube for retaining a 'pocket clip, the groove 3 then being formed in a metal plunger operating on the writing unit. The unit 2 may have the groove 3 formed in a metal end piece attached thereto.
