Abstract

In a system for the continuous or occasional supervision of the hardness of e.g. boiler feed water, an indicator such as eriochrome black and a buffer solution containing ammonia and ammonium chloride are supplied for predetermined periods to a reaction vessel 3 from which they pass into a transparent cell between a light source, filter 11 and selenium cell 13. Photo-electric variations due to colour changes between wine red and blue are recorded by a recording milli-voltmeter.
