[Also in Groups V and XVI] A method of manufacturing embossed composite sheets of plastic material comprising a base sheet with contrasting panels applied thereto, the embossing of the applied panels differing from that of the uncovered base sheet, includes the steps of heating the base sheet, cutting the panels from a second sheet of plastic material, feeding them on to and attaching them to the base sheet, reheating the base sheet with panels attached and simultaneously embossing and bonding the base sheet and the applied panels, the panels being embossed with a different configuration from the uncovered base sheet. A web 1 of thermoplastic base material is fed over a heated drum 2 and between pressure rollers 4, 10. The roller 4 consists of a hollow, perforated, rubber-covered cylinder and is rotatably mounted on a fixed hollow perforated shaft 15 which is in communication with a source of suction. A fixed internal partition 6<SP>1</SP> is mounted within the cylinder so that suction is only applied to a chamber 6 therein. A web 7 of extremely thin plastic material is fed to the roller 4 and held in contact therewith by rollers 3, 8. A cutting roller 5 having cutting edges arranged to cut out square panels contacts the web 7 as the latter is held against the roller 4 and cuts out panels 16 therefrom which panels are held in contact with the roller 4 until deposited on the web 1, by the suction in the chamber 6 acting through the perforations in the roller 4. The panels 16 are pressed against the heated web 1 and secured thereto by passage between the rollers 4, 10. The waste 9 of the web 7 is led away to a take-up spool. After passing between the nip of the rollers 4, 10 the web 1 with the panels 16 thereon is re-heated by an infra-red heater 12 and then fed between embossing and impression cylinders 13, 14, the embossing cylinder being so patterned as to emboss a different pattern on the panels 16 from that on the uncovered parts of the web 1. In the course of the embossing operation the panels are securely bonded to the base.
