An indexible - tool or work-holder for machinetools comprises an axiallymovable and rotatable locating-bolt 10, Figs. 1 and 6, which is supported in a stationary part of the frame 5 and co-operates with a series of abutment-pins 12 on the indexible part 1, the pins being provided with an abutment-face and also rotatable to a limited extent about their axes. The holder 1 has a shaft 2 rotatable in the housing 5 in bearings 3, 4, and a friction-brake 6, 7, prevents unrequired movement of the shaft 2. A hub 17 with ratchet-teeth 32 forms part of the holder 1, and ring 18 is freely rotatable on the hub. This ring carries a double pawl 25 and a spring- plunger 27 which acts as a tumbler-device to engage alternate ends of the pawl with the ratchet. The periphery of the ring 18 is toothed to engage a rack 20, which is reciprocated by an hydraulic piston and cylinder arrangement 21, Fig. 2. The locating-bolt 10 is also withdrawn by an hydraulic cylinder 11, Fig. 1, prior to the indexing-movement by the ratchet- and pawl mechanism. The pins 12, Fig. 6, are arranged at an inclination to the radial, and are adjustable axially by a shouldered screw 40, the head of which is reached through an aperture 15 in the casing 5. The index-positions may thus be adjusted through a small amount. Pneumatic or mechanical operating-elements may be used in lieu of the hydraulic arrangement described.
