Abstract

860,722. Controlling vehicles. CLARK EQUIPMENT CO. Aug. 17, 1959 [Oct. 13, 1958], No. 27977/59. Class 79(5). Fluid-activated forward and reverse clutches 14, 15 in the transmission of a wheeled vehicle are controlled by an hydraulic actuator 41 connected by a conduit 38 to the master brake cylinder 36 which is connected by a second conduit 40 and valve means 52, 60 to braking elements 50 at the wheels 51, movement of the piston means 34 in a direction to apply the brakes first initiating full movement of the actuator 41 and then causing the valve means to open. The actuator contains a piston 42 loaded by a spring 44 which permits the actuator to displace a valve 16 controlling the clutches before the valve 52 is lifted from its seat against the resistance of a spring 54 to ailow fluid to operate the brakes, the return valve 60 remaining seated due to its larger effective area in a passageway 58 as compared with that in the conduit 40. The valve 16 serves first to diminish the pressure supplied to conduit 12 and a direction selector 13 by first opening a by-pass 22 and thereafter throttling the conduit 12. The invention may be applied to an industrial lift truck. Specification 799,817 is referred to.
