Abstract

859,887. Waveguide seals. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Nov. 14, 1958, No. 36703/58. Class 40(8). [Also in Group XL(a)] A mica sheet is sealed to a metal surface by serrating the edge of the sheet and sealing the serrated edge to the metal by means of a glass bead. The sheet may form a sealing window for a waveguide 12 constituting the output of a velocity-modulated beam tube. The window assembly consists of a silver-plated nickel-iron cup 2 having a central depression 3 forming a frame for an aperture with parallel sides and rounded ends. The serrated edge of a mica sheet 5 of similar profile is painted with an aqueous glass paste and placed within the depression. After the paste has dried, the assembly is placed in an oven to fuse the glass which forms a hermetic seal. The window assembly is attached to the waveguide 2 by means of a short cylindrical casing 13 having a hollow stem 14 of rectangular cross-section which fits over and is soldered to the end of the waveguide. The interior surfaces of the waveguide and the casing are covered in the vicinity of the joint by thin sheets 16 of copper foil which are soldered in position. Interposed between the window and the casing is a thin disc 18 of goldplated phosphor-bronze having a central aperture the rim of which is formed into a number of twisted prongs 20. These contact the surfaces on either side and the gold plating forms a golddiffusion seal. After assembly, a hermetic joint is made between the cylindrical surfaces of the cup 2 and the casing 13. The flange of a further waveguide may be arranged to fit within the cup 2.
